Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town 2027 has a second host. On October 20, the conference announced on X that MoneyBadger, the company that lets South Africans pay with bitcoin at the till, is co‑hosting the event. "Local is lekker!" the post said, South African slang for "local is great."
The conference site now lists MoneyBadger beside Bitcoin Ekasi, the Mossel Bay township circular economy that BAS reported as the host when it previewed the 2027 edition in September.
Here's what MoneyBadger does, what the 2027 conference covers and how to take part.
What MoneyBadger Does for Bitcoin Payments in South Africa
MoneyBadger lets people pay with bitcoin online or in store, and settles merchants in rand, bitcoin or a stablecoin, according to its website. Customers scan a QR code and pay from a Lightning wallet such as Blink or Aqua, or from an exchange account such as Luno, VALR, Binance or Bybit.
Its reach comes through payment partners. In October 2025, an integration with Scan to Pay opened more than 650,000 merchants to crypto payments settled in rand, Cointelegraph reported. Bybit's April 2026 announcement of its own MoneyBadger integration also counts 31,000 locations through Zapper and more than 1,500 Pick n Pay stores. BAS has also covered MoneyBadger's integration with Ozow.
CEO Carel van Wyk, who helped start the exchange Luno, spoke at the 2026 edition of Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town on "MoneyBadger: Scaling Bitcoin commerce to 650,000 shops," according to the speaker list.
"South Africans are increasingly moving from holding Bitcoin as an investment to using it for everyday spending," he told Cointelegraph.
Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town 2027: Dates, Venue and Tickets
The fourth edition runs on 26 and 27 February 2027 at Workshop17 Watershed in Cape Town's V&A Waterfront.
It calls itself "the boots‑on‑the‑ground Bitcoin conference for real‑world adoption in Southern Africa," and its call for speakers rules out altcoin talks.
"The steady decline of the South African state over decades has prompted the emergence of parallel institutions," the conference site says.
Tickets are sold on Pretix. Attendees from South Africa or elsewhere in Africa pay R1,500 for both days or R750 for one day. International visitors pay R3,900 for the "Lekker Early" ticket, and a R10,000 VIP ticket adds branded gear and access to the invite‑only speakers' dinner. Speaker proposals for keynotes, talks, workshops and panels are open until 1 February 2027.
Two trips follow the conference. Bitcoin Ekasi's Garden Route road trip runs from 28 February to 5 March and visits six circular economies along the southern coast. The Pan‑African Bitcoin Tour runs from 7 to 15 March, from Cape Town to Uganda, Kenya and Zambia.
