Tanzania gets its first BitDevs on Friday. BitDevs Arusha holds its opening meetup on November 7, 2026, with Btrust as sponsor. It is the newest chapter in Btrust's BitDevs network in Africa.

Man Like Kweks, founder of Bitcoin Arusha, called it a dream come true in his announcement on November 2. He thanked Btrust, credited @_husseinissa and @gijjah_jacob, and said the goal is to start building a community of Bitcoin developers in Tanzania.

Here is what the first meetup covers, what a BitDevs is, and what Bitcoin Arusha has built so far.

The First BitDevs Arusha Meetup

The event poster lists three parts: Bitcoin fundamentals, a Socratic seminar and live demos. Entry is free and attendees are asked to bring a laptop. Registration is on Luma.

The venue is the Mega Complex on Bondeni Street in Arusha. The same building houses the Bitcoin Arusha Hub, on the seventh floor in the Westerwelle Startup Haus co‑working space, where Bitcoin Arusha held its Trezor Academy sessions and its Genesis Block Day hangout this year.

The Socratic seminar is the BitDevs format. Btrust describes it as a group discussion of recent protocol developments, research and open‑source projects. Participants work through the material together instead of watching a presentation. You do not need to be a developer to attend.

Btrust's BitDevs Network in Africa

Arusha is one of eight locations Btrust has added since 2025. In a post on October 23, the non‑profit listed Kisumu, Cape Town, Maputo, Blantyre, Zaria, Ibadan, Lomé and Arusha as additions to the 13 locations it supported across nine countries in 2025. Those 13 hosted more than 70 meetups last year, with about 1,900 in‑person attendances.

Btrust was set up in 2021 with 500 BTC from Jack Dorsey and Jay‑Z to fund Bitcoin development in Africa and India. It pays for the BitDevs chapters and publishes an open‑source BitDevs Playbook for organisers.

The chapters are a way in. Btrust says members of African BitDevs communities have gone on to the BOSS Challenge and Btrust Builders, and some now work full‑time on open source with support from Btrust and the Human Rights Foundation.

What Bitcoin Arusha Has Built

BitDevs Arusha grows out of Bitcoin Arusha, a community that has so far focused on education. Its Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town speaker page describes it as a grassroots initiative building a Bitcoin circular economy and a community hub in Arusha. Kweks, an artist, is its founder.

In October 2025 the Human Rights Foundation funded Bitcoin Arusha in its 1 billion satoshi grant round. HRF cited its Swahili‑language Bitcoin education through music, dance and events, in a country where foreign currency use is restricted and the shilling keeps losing value.

The Bitcoin Arusha Hub is open, and in February the community ran three Trezor Academy sessions there in Swahili with POWA255. It also launched Hedhi Huru with the DADAS Juhudi na Maarifa Group: 1,000 reusable pad kits and Bitcoin education for girls in 11 schools in the Kilimanjaro region, paid for in sats.
