Btrust won't hold a Developer Day in 2026. In a post on X on October 15, the Bitcoin developer nonprofit said it is "using this time to listen, reflect, and prepare for a bigger next chapter in 2027."

The post's image shows an empty, red‑lit stage under the words "Bigger stage. Bolder conversations. Coming soon."

A few hours later, Btrust CEO Abubakar Nur Khalil shared the announcement with a hint at a new name: "Btrust Dev Con 2027 > Btrust Dev Day. More updates soon."

Here's what the first two Developer Days delivered, what Btrust does for African developers and what's known about 2027 so far.

The first Btrust Developer Day ran on December 8, 2024, at the JW Marriott in Nairobi, as the opening day of the Africa Bitcoin Conference. It brought together more than 250 developers, builders and open‑source contributors from across the continent, according to Btrust.

The second edition moved to the Trianon Convention Centre in Mauritius on December 2, 2025, again opening the Africa Bitcoin Conference. It was free to attend and ran under the theme "Build Locally, Contribute Globally," with tracks on privacy, security and wallets, Lightning and Layer 2, hands‑on workshops and project showcases.

The event site lists 29 speakers, Khalil among them.

What Btrust Does for African Bitcoin Developers

Btrust was founded in 2021 with a 500 BTC donation from Jack Dorsey and Jay‑Z. It finds, trains and pays Bitcoin open‑source engineers in the Global South.

Developers new to open source can apply for a six‑month starter grant, mid‑to‑senior African engineers learn Bitcoin and Lightning development through Btrust Builders, and Btrust backs BitDevs meetups in 13 African cities.

In September, it awarded grants to ten Bitcoin developers, seven of them in Nigeria and Kenya, for work on Bitcoin Core, Lightning, mining and wallet libraries.

At the Africa Bitcoin Conference last December, Khalil laid out Btrust's plan to widen who builds Bitcoin through grants, education and partnerships.

What We Know About Btrust Dev Con 2027

Khalil's post calls the 2027 event "Btrust Dev Con" instead of "Dev Day," which hints at a full conference rather than a one‑day event. Btrust hasn't confirmed the format.

Both Developer Days so far opened the Africa Bitcoin Conference. This year's conference runs December 2 to 5 in Blantyre, Malawi, without a Btrust Developer Day to start it.
