The Core, a Nairobi‑based Bitcoin education project, has announced its fourteenth monthly meetup for 26 September 2026 at Murang'a University of Technology. It is the first time the series has been held on a university campus, and the first to raise capacity from 50 to 100 attendees.

What happens at a The Core Bitcoin meetup

The meetups follow the same agenda every month: the history and properties of money, Bitcoin basics, wallet setup, live send‑and‑receive practice, a Trezor hardware‑wallet demonstration, and a closing discussion on why Bitcoin matters.

Trezor Academy has sponsored the hardware training throughout 2026, which means attendees leave with hands‑on experience on a real device rather than slides. Sessions are usually capped at 50 so every person can complete a transaction.

The Core Bitcoin meetup locations in 2026

The series has moved to a new location almost every month this year.

  • Meetup 8, 24 January, Thika: First meetup of 2026. Attendees sent and received sats over Lightning on the spot.

  • Meetup 9, 28 February, Nairobi CBD (HH Towers): Return to the capital.

  • Meetup 10, March, Nakuru: The first time the series left Nairobi. Organizers spent four hours on the evolution of money and said the session "got people thinking differently about how money works."

  • Meetup 11, 16 May, Kiambu (Ozone Resort): Added a Fedi workshop so participants could join federations and convert small amounts of bitcoin to M‑Pesa.

  • Meetup 12, 1 August, Nairobi CBD (HH Towers): Series resumed after a short break.

  • Meetup 13, 29 August, Thika (Cascade Primer): Strong youth turnout and live network demonstrations.

  • Meetup 14, 26 September, Murang'a University of Technology: First university campus. Capacity raised to 100. Registration at thecore.africa.

Who founded The Core Bitcoin education project

The Core was founded by Felix Mukungu, a Kenyan educator who started with a nine‑chapter Bitcoin course shared in a WhatsApp group after a costly first encounter with crypto scams. The project later adopted the open‑source Bitcoin Diploma curriculum from My First Bitcoin and added meetups, content, and community work. As of 2026 the program has graduated 643‑plus students from more than 28 countries, with over 321,500 sats awarded to graduates.

The Core Bitcoin Diploma and Githurai circular economy

The meetups are one layer of a larger effort.

The free online Bitcoin Diploma runs four intakes a year (January, April, July, October), 24 sessions over two months on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. East African Time. Graduates receive a certificate and 500 sats sent to their Lightning wallet. Cohort 11 completed in August 2026. The program is sponsored by HRF and supported by My First Bitcoin, Bitcoin Ubuntu, Afribit, Blink, and Trezor Academy.

In Githurai, the Nairobi settlement where Felix once lived, The Core has onboarded 16 merchants to accept Lightning payments, including boda riders, food vendors, and shops, each given wallets, flyers, stickers, and QR codes. The project started in October 2023 and currently reports 0 to 9 transactions per day. Students visit the area to spend sats with those merchants.

On 4 April 2026, The Core and My First Bitcoin hosted Unconference 03 at Sarit Centre in Nairobi. More than 500 people attended, about 80 percent of them youth, and 18 local projects presented, including EcoBitz, Bitcoin Babies, Afribit Kibera, Bitsacco, and many more.

Several alumni have gone on to start their own projects, including Bitcoin Githurai, Bitcoin School Kenya, and Yes Bitcoin Haiti.
