Most Bitcoin price trackers quote BTC in US dollars. For users and builders in Africa, the practical price of Bitcoin depends on local exchange rates, capital controls, and parallel markets. CitrusRate is a Bitcoin data platform that surfaces real‑time BTC prices in African currencies, covering both official and black market rates.
What CitrusRate shows
The homepage displays live Bitcoin prices across 41 African currencies in two tabs: Official and Black Market. The API documentation lists all 41 supported tickers, from Angolan Kwanza (AOA) to Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWD), plus 13 currencies with parallel market and P2P rate data. It also shows commodities priced in BTC, global currencies, and a provider comparison table for exchanges operating in Nigeria and Kenya (with Ghana and South Africa listed as coming soon).
The platform includes:
- On‑chain analytics with a proprietary "Bitcoin Market Pulse" that translates on‑chain metrics into plain language.
- Macro Hub showing inflation rates, money supply (M0 through M3), FX reserves, and central bank balance sheets, expressed in both local currency and BTC.
- Devaluation Defense Score ranking currencies by recent performance against Bitcoin.
- DCA Engine, Currency Converter, Invoice Generator, and Inflation Calculator.
- OTC and Liquidity Provider directories.
- An Academy, Blog, and Podcast.
The homepage lists African Bitcoiners, iPayBTC, Trezor Academy, and Blink among the companies using the platform.
Who built CitrusRate
CitrusRate was founded by Balogun Malik, a software engineer from Oyo State, Nigeria, based in Lagos. He spoke at the Africa Bitcoin Conference 2025 in Mauritius and is listed on StartupList Africa as the founder. He also founded Preneurs Connect, an initiative for entrepreneurs to understand and use Bitcoin.
CitrusRate developer API
The developer section offers subscription plans for projects that need programmatic access to African Bitcoin rates. Plans range from Hobby ($244/year, 30 requests per minute) to Business ($5,032/year, 3,000 requests per minute). Features scale with each tier: single BTC/fiat rates at the entry level, batch rates and black market data at higher tiers.
A notable feature is L402 Protocol support for Bitcoin Lightning micropayments. Instead of a subscription, developers pay per access window:
- Single BTC rate: 50 sats for 10 minutes
- Batch rates: 100 sats
- Black market (single): 500 sats
- Black market (all): 1,500 sats
This is useful for one‑off scripts, researchers, or anyone who needs a quick lookup without committing to a plan.
The API base URL is api.citrusrate.com/v1, authenticated with an X‑API‑Key header. WebSocket streams push official rates every 3 seconds and black market rates every 5 seconds. Full endpoint documentation is at citrusrate.com/docs. Product details and pricing can change; check the developer page directly.
